Welcome to Fall Tutors!

The first two weeks have flown by and we are well into the tutoring season!  Many students are proactively coming into the office to request tutoring and most tutors have received at least one student.  If you haven't yet, have no fear, I'm sure we'll get a student for you soon!

Each week, I update a list of courses needed on our website.  Check it out to see if you can tutor any of these courses:  http://cde.uiowa.edu/index.php/tutoringneededlink.html.  If you have friends who would like to tutor or you think would make a good tutor in any of those courses, recommend that they apply to become a tutor!

Tutela may be updated less frequently this semester due to the fact that I am counseling students in addition to working with all of you on our tutoring staff.  Remember that it IS considered required reading so please make sure to check it when I email you the link!

Tutor Brown-Bag Lunch Discussions

Do you want to meet other TRIO tutors and discuss tutoring strategies?  Come to one of our brown bag lunch discussions!  Bring along your lunch, meet other tutors, ask questions, share tutoring strategies.  These informal gatherings were created based on feedback from tutors during the Spring 2009 semester.

All Tutor Brown-Bag Lunch Discussions will be held in the conference room in 18 Phillips Hall.  These are option meetings, and are not paid sessions.  You must also provide your own lunch.  We hope you join us for these informal gathering of TRIO Tutors!

Illness/Sickness Policy

Tutors, by now you probably have received mass emails from the University about taking precautions with this year's flu season approaching, especially with the H1N1 variety that is expected to re-emerge this fall.  If you have flu-like symptoms, please do not tutor.  Make every effort to cancel your session 8 hours in advance and reschedule when you are feeling well again.  The University is requesting that anyone with flu-like symptoms with a fever not return to campus until 24 hours after the fever is over.  See http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/sick.htm for more information.

If you have students who cancel tutoring sessions due to the flu, please still complete the Tutoring Report as a "no show" but write on the top of the page in large letters "flu" so that I know to count it as an excused absence.  I hope we won't have to deal with this issue to much this fall, but we wanted to be proactive and let you all know now how we'd like you to handle it.

Fall 2009 TRIO Tutor Training Schedule

Tutors, the fall training schedule has been posted.  Please respond to Brooke's email to let us know whether or not you plan to attend.  Remember that Level One Tutor Training is required of ALL tutors in the first year of being hired.  Supplemental Trainings are option for first-year tutors, but you need to attend three to move from Level 2 to Level 3.  We highly recommend all tutors attend Supplemental Training sessions if possible!  Trainings are a paid event!

Greetings Tutors,

The weather is warming up outside and we are nearing the end of the semester.  We have received and assigned a record number of student requests (381 requests assigned, 406 requests made)!  Our staff has grown to include 83 tutors!  I want you all to take a moment and realize what a great job you all have been doing!  Thank you for your hard work and keep it up for the last push to finals.

Remember that tutoring is required through the week before finals week.  If you have tests and projects during that week, you may reschedule tutoring sessions with students, but not cancel sessions altogether.  Tutoring during finals week is optional.  Check with your student(s) if you are able to tutor during that week to see if they are interested as well.

If you have not done so already, please respond to my emails about your plans to return in the summer or fall and whether or not you are graduating this spring.  We need this information as we prepare to recruit new tutors for Fall 2009.  The sooner I get your reply the better!
