New Opportunities in Education

If you are a currently enrolled undergraduate student, please plan to attend the third annual University of Iowa College of Education "Passport to New Opportunities."  This event, designed especially to attract students from underrepresented populations to careers in education, will provide a wealth of information about the College of Education resources and services available.  Students also will learn about the elementary and secondary programs in Teacher Education and the enrollment application process, including the Special Consideration Policy for select student populations.  

Raffle prizes and refreshments will be provided.

Special Invitation

The University of Iowa School of Social Work would like you to know about the upcoming screenings of a very wonderful new documentary that has very special meaning for Iowa City and the University. It's a feature-length documentary called "A Friend Indeed - the Bill Sackter Story," and it will be playing at the Englert Theater on October 1,4, and 5 at 7:30 pm.

If you have been to North Hall, you probably have seen "Wild Bill's Coffee Shop" and perhaps you saw the made-for-tv movie "Bill" (1981) starring Mickey Rooney and Dennis Quaid. Now you have a chance to know the real and fascinating story of one of our most famous Iowans, Bill Sackter, in this inspirational documentary on events that took place here in Iowa City.

Gamma Chapter Foundation Scholarship Fund

Gamma Chapter Foundation Scholarship Fund

The Gamma Chapter Foundation Scholarship Fund has been established for the purpose of financially assisting African American students enrolled at the University of Iowa. Gamma Chapter is the local chapter of the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. Gamma Chapter was established at the University of Iowa in 1914, making it the first and oldest African American organization on the campus. The Chapter is pleased to give back to the local community and partnership with the Center for Diversity & Enrichment in assisting young African Americans.

The GCFSF scholarship is a $1,000 scholarship to be awarded to an African American student. Students applying must be in good academic standing and enrolled when the scholarship is awarded. The scholarship will be awarded spring 2009. The criteria used for evaluation will include items such as overall academic achievement, community service, and volunteer participation. Tutoring in the Residence Halls

Students who live in the residence halls can use the new University Housing tutoring service.  This tutoring can be used in addition to tutoring through our office or instead of our tutoring and supplemental instruction sessions. Study Abroad Research Internship Award

Center for International Rural and Environmental Health (C I R E H), Iowa Biosciences Advantage (IBA) Program, and the National Institutes of Health (NIH)

PURPOSE OF AWARD
Because of the significant disparity in the overall rate of disease incidence, prevalence, morbidity, mortality and survival rates in minority populations as compared to the health status of the general population, there is a national need for increasing the number of well-trained minority scientists in the fields of biomedical, clinical, behavioral, and health services research.

Eight undergraduate awards and two graduate/professional awards are available to enable minority students to gain international research experience in a health related area. Priority will be given to students enrolled in a degree-seeking program [at the time of application] at the University of Iowa or the University of Northern Iowa who demonstrate interest in research pertinent to reducing and/or eliminating health disparities.

Community of Color - Getting Connected

The Community of Color program, held on August 27, 2008, brought together hundreds of students and staff. Music, food and great door prizes helped to kick off the new semester. However, the best part was getting connected with each other – the energy and conversation was fun and exciting!

The music was provided by Doug Jackson who is also a local DJ for KCCK, 88.3 FM.   

The event was not just a social gathering. Student leaders were able to let participants know about upcoming student organization meetings and events. Campus offices shared information about services and programs geared toward students. Local businesses, such as HNI corporation, provided networking opportunities.                                                                                  

Several give-a-ways were handed out at the event but the big door prizes were MP3 players and gift cards to Target. One of the winners of an MP3 player, Sterling Martin, is pictured below.

The Community of Color is one of our largest programs and has become the traditional start to each new semester. So watch for the next Community of Color program in January 2009 so we can enjoy the event again to get the spring semester off to a great start.

The Center for Diversity & Enrichment is partnering with specific Iowa City area schools to create programming to enrich students' academic participation and nurture their interest in attending a four-year college or university.  If you are interested in volunteering your experiences as a college student and speaking at one of these lunch sessions, please email Marisa Moore at marisa-moore@uiowa.edu  

This is an excellent chance to give back to the community while developing your speaking skills.

Friday After Class (FAC) is Back for the Academic Year--Join Us

This is the third year of FAC which has been a very popular series with students because of the opportunity to meet, to discuss issues, and to connect with popular professors and other students in an informal setting. In addition faculty will be sharing their own stories and journeys to academia including the challenges along the way.  This fall three professors in varying fields provide this opportunity to students. The professors represent mathematics, social work, and health and sports studies.

Students, please come and spend time with the FAC group at Wild Bill’s Coffee Shop.  You’ll have the chance to ask the professors whatever questions you’d like. We’re confident you will come from the event with some comment(s) that will resonate with you for some time.

Some bonus benefits to students from connections made in earlier FAC presentations have included employment, a part in a play, and some real encouragement and inspiration. Come participate and find out what yours may be!

The CDE eNewsletter will no longer be emailed out each month. We have decided to make our newsletter an RSS feed. What does that mean exactly?

Model for Success

Model for Success

You are invited to take part in the Model for Success program.

This program is designed as a series of six meetings throughout the year (three in the fall, three in the spring) that will develop and improve your skills in the areas of personal growth, academic goal achievement, leadership development, and networking skills.

Participants will receive a variety of rewards including:

Support tools given away at each session, such as a planner

Community building with other serious students

A Certificate of Completion if you attend a minimum of four sessions (Resume builder!)

Networking opportunities that can lead to internships or jobs

Welcome back to the University of Iowa.  We hope you had a pleasant summer and are geared up for the fall semester.   We have many programs planned especially for you and encourage you to get connected.  Our campus has suffered some damage from the flood, but we have made strides in getting ready for your return. 

If you are interested in volunteering for the Center for Diversity & Enrichment, please contact us so we can get you involved in our programming.  Contact your assigned multicultural coordinator, and they will get you involved.  We are looking for students for our pen pal program, campus visits, student panels, as well as assisting us with our school and community partners. 

If you are between classes, drop by and check out our new lounge.  It is equipped with computers and study space.

We are so happy you are back and look forward to seeing you soon.

The University of Iowa Graduate College is holding its annual open house program for junior and senior undergraduates contemplating pursuit of graduate education.  You are encouraged to attend this free event.  Read more below.

The event will be held Thursday, October 16, 2008, from 9 a.m. until 3:45 p.m. at the Sheraton Iowa City Hotel.  It will provide an opportunity for highly motivated students to learn more about the advantages and resources of pursuing graduate education at The University of Iowa.  The program will feature:
 
Presentations and informal Q&A sessions with faculty and student panels
§  Learn about the application and admissions process to graduate school
§  Meet and talk with students about graduate student life
§  Hear about strategies and programs for financing your graduate education
Visits to academic departments and programs around campus
§  Talk to faculty and students in your program(s) of interest
§  Tour the campus facilities
 
Students from many Iowa colleges and universities have been invited to this event, as well as students from several institutions in neighboring states.

Want to make a difference? New Dimensions in Learning is currently hiring tutors for undergraduate courses.  Basic requirements include:
➢    UI GPA = 3.0 or higher
➢    Currently enrolled as a UI student (undergraduates preferred)
➢    Earned an A or B in the courses you wish to tutor
➢    Want to help a fellow student
