Spring Study-A-Thon

The Spring 2009 Study-A-Thon is approaching!  Mark your calendars for this night of studying, socializing, and snacking!  The Study-A-Thon will be on Friday, May 8, 2009, from 5-10 PM in S401 Pappajohn Business Building. 

There will be a group study area, quiet study rooms, a small number of tutors available for quick help, and refreshments.  We hope you consider joining us for this end of the semester event - bring your friends along and make it a fun start to the weekend before finals!

Congratulations to Roberto Paniagua!

Recognize this face? If you have ever visited CDE, you probably know that face belongs to Roberto. He is a welcomed presence at CDE, whether helping with initiatives and programming or assisting a fellow student and is one of the best ambassadors for CDE. In addition to being a "regular good guy," Roberto is also a great student with a wide range of interests that he pursues to learn more about himself and the ways of the world. It was this keen curiosity that led to his seeking to become a Research Fellow with the Iowa Center for Research by Undergraduates (ICRU). During this year, he worked with Dr. Johnnie Sims to more closely examine climate issues among CDE students and propose programming to address the issues. This was the first year the ICRU provided funding for a nonacademic department and the first year that CDE has been associated with ICRU. Just like so many things Roberto has been affiliated with, positive results followed. We are proud to announce that on April 25, Roberto was awarded outstanding poster presentation in the social science division among ICRU Research Fellows. This is a great honor for both Roberto and CDE. The DIVE Project that was the outcome of his research efforts is being perused for implementation for the upcoming academic year.

When you see Roberto in the hallways of CDE or about campus, be sure to say hello and congratulate him.

H. Alexander Robinson serves as the executive director and CEO of the National Black Justice Coalition <http://www.nbjc.org/>  (NBJC). NBJC is the nation’s black same-gender loving, lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender civil rights organization. Robinson was a member of Obama for America’s National LGBT Steering Committee and is the recipient of numerous awards including, most recently, the Andrew Goodman Freedom Prize. Join Connections for a discussion with H. Alexander Robinson about the importance of the recent Iowa Supreme Court decision concerning civil marriage equality.

TRIO Recognizes Scholars

It is with great pleasure that TRIO Student Support Services, New Dimensions in Learning (NDIL) announces scholarship winners from two distinguished TRIO members/Advantage Iowa Scholars affiliated with The Center for Diversity & Enrichment.

Nghia Tran has been awarded the McNair Scholarship.  This Scholars Program prepares undergraduate students for future graduate study leading to the Ph.D. degree. 

Nghia is a Chemical Engineering major from Des Moines, Iowa.  Nghia has been actively involved in TRIO since he was a high school student involved in Upward Bound at Simpson College.  Nghia is completing his second year at Iowa.  Nghia has shown much promise as an exceptionally successful student and an active campus participant.  Nghia was also on the Dean's list his first two years and has been a member of the Honors program, in addition to a number of other achievements.  Congratulations, Nghia!

Jackie Herzberg has been awarded the George S. Schaeffer Scholarship for 2009-2010 academic year.  Jackie is an Integrative Physiology (pre-med) major from Villisca, Iowa.  Jackie also is completing her second year at Iowa.  She has been an active TRIO member who has worked as a chemistry tutor for NDIL since her freshman year.

Jackie was also awarded a summer internship during a conference sponsored by TRIO at The Midwest Area Educational Opportunities Program Personnel.  Jackie has been on the Dean's list since her freshman year and on the President's list since last semester.  Jackie is also a member of the Honors program, in addition to a host of other achievements.  Congratulations, Jackie!
